Movie Review

This movie sucks. Turned it off after 30 minutes. You can not maintain a joke like that through an entire movie.

And to all the critics who hailed it as work of comedic genius? Ya'll can go eat a cock.

That is all.

Absolutely agree with you!

Totally disagree with you. I went to this movie 7 frickin' times. Needless to say, it was my favorite of last year. It might have helped if you had seen it in a theatre. Comedies are always funnier with a crowd.

Tom, I actually laughed quite a bit during the opening bits: the kissing of the sister and the running of Jew, but from then on, every time "Borat" fucked with people, it was just so formulaic it was immediately dull: Oh, the driving instructor is putting up with that? I'll try offering him booze. That didn't work? I'll try something more ridiculous. By the time he hit the rodeo, I was just bored senseless by it. Then again, people messing with people just for the sake of messing with people is humor's lowest common denominator, in my opinion, even lower than poop, fart and masturbation jokes (which I heartily endorse). I doubt being in a theater would have helped matters much. This was walk-out material.

Now, "Bad Santa:" THERE'S a movie I completely regret not seeing in the theater. That movie still gets me laughing to the point of tears. Damn I wish I would have seen that with a crowd.

Haven't seen Borat, but I kinda want to, now that I heard you give Bad Santa a thumbs-up. I hated that movie. Coming from me, a guy who normally likes degenerate, booze-laden humor, that is saying something.

Maybe it was the midget thing?

That movie had me at "Fuck me Santa. . ."

seed, you hated Bad Santa? What the fuck, man? I laughed so hard during that fucking movie. Totally with Ryan: from "fuck me Santa," on I was sold.

Alright, now I am going to have to rent it again and see if my initial reaction was accurate. The Fuck me, Santa line does bring bring a smile to my face. And then there's the pinball machine scene. I'll have to reacquaint myself with the material. I remember being bored with the dick jokes.

I dunno. Maybe I saw it at at time when I was taking things too seriously.

*scratching head

i agree. i got bored immediately. the only bit of his i think is funny is his gay fashion reporter guy (Bruno), because i think it's funny to fuck with egocentric narcissists who will talk on and on about themselves and never quite get that it's a joke, cuz they are the joke. but fucking with average joes from canada to eastern europe and making fun of their ways of life? that's not entertainment. that's shooting fish in a barrel, not to mention really assholish. so *yawn*.

i did agree, however, with the Time mag reviewer ( http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1552026,00.html ) who said that the real joke is on the viewer. people who BELIEVE the things he's saying about other cultures (drinking out the toilet, sleeping with sheep, etc.) and are laughing are really who he's making fun of. which i sort of get. but i still think it's annoying.

go see 300. Loved it, although it wasn't always (hardly ever) realistic. Really good though, blood, guts, guys in speedo looking things, hubby said hot chicks, it was all good. What more could you want. Then as we were coming out, this kid goes, was that a real story? And the parent said, not really. Don't they teach history any more? Or am I just really fucking old?

Posted by: Donna at April 8, 2007 08:07 PM

Well, "Not really" is an accurate description. Obviously, it didn't REALLY happen that way. But whatev.
