Soooo, go read the comments from my Nick Coleman post. Pay particular attention to commenter #6, Deb.
Then go to her site. And view the picture to the right.
And, well. . . will Plain Layne ever totally go away?
Posted by Ryan at April 28, 2005 11:31 PMAnd Deb is on a photo labelled kimmy.jpg - well! It looks as if another thread has unraveled.
I'm onto your roguish game, Soli.
Posted by: DJ at April 29, 2005 12:27 AMOdin wouldn't be that careless. I think Deb just grabbed the Layne pic as a joke. Otherwise there's no way she/he would have commented on my blog.
Posted by: Ryan at April 29, 2005 12:39 AMShe didn't have to steal a picture. She could have used the infamous cow pic free and clear.
Posted by: Jim at April 29, 2005 07:50 AMYeah, she showed up on my blog last night too. And went out of her way to provide a link to her blog. I e-mailed you about it as soon as I spotted it, but I guess I was a little behind the curve.
Evidence does seem to suggest that she grabbed the pic from somewhere. I wonder if her comments here and at my blog are part of a larger pattern of strafing old Layne readers with junk comments to lure us over.
I had a brief moment of hoping she might be a lead on who the girl in the picture really is, but her presence on both our blogs would seem to indicate that she's dropping clues on purpose, which makes it less likely that she really has any.
Posted by: Joshua at April 29, 2005 10:19 AMOk, that's just odd.
The writing doesn't seem like Soli's, unless he's deliberatly trying to write really poorly. But he wouldn't be dumb enough to use one of the same pics.
Posted by: David Grenier at April 29, 2005 10:39 AMJoshua, I received no such e-mail. She appeared at your blog too, eh? Something fishy is going on here. I wonder what's up.
Posted by: Ryan at April 29, 2005 11:13 AMI think someone's just winding us up.
Posted by: Joshua at April 29, 2005 11:31 AMAbout the only thing that has me wound up about this is the fact I don't recall that specific picture being in the Plain Layne photo album. However, it's been a long time since the Plain Layne hoax, so I probably just don't remember it.
Posted by: Ryan at April 29, 2005 11:35 AMI don't know. She's got her "full name" on the site and is constantly talking about doing drugs. She also prefers girls and is in a girl band. ?????
Posted by: klo at April 29, 2005 11:56 AMThere was also this off her site:
any of u's remember taht ode to hardcore porn that ryan wrote at thanksgiving? i just remembered it and was cracking up to mysef. that was wonderful.
About the only thing that has me wound up about this is the fact I don't recall that specific picture being in the Plain Layne photo album.
Same here. So I went to the Internet Archive and checked the old Aptura logs, as well as the Wayback Machine's log of Layne's photo page:
http://web.archive.org/web/20030803113719/plainlayne.dreamh0st.com/pictures.html
The image called Kimmy.jpg is there as:
http://web.archive.org/web/20040621233640/plainlayne.dreamh0st.com/images/41.jpg
The only question left is, why did this particular person use and/or have an archive of this particular picture. But that's not nearly as compelling as the possibility that we might have had a lead on the actual girl in the photos.
But you know, looking at these photos, I'm struck once again by my curiosity about who the girl in the photos really is. It's clearly someone the photographer had access to for a while; her hair grows a good five inches over the course of the photo spread. Alternatively, the woman in the pictures handed a bunch of photos over to Odin and he scanned them. But the bubble bath picture suggests to me that she knew the photos were going to be used on the internet, or at least posted publicly somewhere. She's reasonably hot, so she couldn't be that hard up for attention. And look at the 24.jpg. Does that look like the bedroom of that girl? Or anyone she's likely to be hanging out with socially? That looks like someone's parents' guest bedroom to me. I think this almost has to be a member of Odin's immediate family. A sister or a sister-in-law or something. Maybe his wife? I don't know, but that's the one element of all this I still wonder about. So Debora or Kimmy or whoever picked the right gag to make me curious.
I think it's safe to assume that it's not Odin's wife, mainly because Mitch Berg would have figured out who the author was a lot sooner than that, unless of course he never met Odin's wife, which I suppose is possible.
There is something about the mystery of her identity though. Odin knew her, that much I'm reasonably certain of.
Posted by: Ryan at April 29, 2005 02:02 PMWasn't there a big family picture posted at one time that had Odin in the background and "Layne" in the foreground?
I can't imagine this is an Odin Soli project unless he basically went off the deep end and was more yanking our chains than really trying to pass anything off. I mean, why would he use the same picture then post to the blogs of people who are most likely to figure it out instantly? When he made the Acanit/Layne switch he created a whole new persona and avoided all of Acanit's old haunts.
It's quite possible that it's some other regular commenter. Like I could see Joshua doing this to fuck with Ryan, kinda like claiming there is some animated gif of a fly appearing on his website. But the comment left at Strip Mining seems like someone who actually wants to be taken seriously (either as themselves or as the persona) rather than just a gag.
The writer mentions a band that seems to be an actual high school band, and an actual coffee shop in the Bay Area (coffee catz). At least a quick google seems to confirm those things. Odin was always much more vague about everything.
Plus, the spelling and grammar are atrocious, and the writing reads much more like a teenage girls livejournal than a grown man trying to create an interesting character.
But it still begs the question: Why would someone use that particular picture on their blog and then show up on Ryan and Joshua's comment boxes? Anyone keep track of other former Laynatics? Anyone see if she's popped up on other blogs recently?
I can't imagine its the actual girl in the photos, because if it was and she wanted traffic you figure her first post would be an expose on Odin and Layne and her pictures.
So if its not the actual girl, and its not Odin, and its not someone in that circle just playing a prank, than what the fuck is it?
And why does she say she lives in the Ukraine when she obviously lives in Northern California?
Posted by: David Grenier at April 29, 2005 04:56 PMwow, never thought i would get this attention. ok, so i stole the pic.
joshua: i made a point of putting my full name and stuff on your site cause it said i couldn't. apperently "questionable content" or something of the sort. yeh, my name is kimberly. yeh, i live in sebastopol, not sevastopol. big whop, if my mom finds the site i die. lol. i seriously never beleived that much conversation would be had over this. i only learnt about plain layne from this site, and proceeded to download the entire archive from some nice guy who uploaded it for me. i used the picture from that. yeh, coffe cartz is real, i actually went there tonight with freinds to see "girls in suede." check it. its true.
i didn't mean to seem like i was "playing a prank" or anyhitng, i am just trying to keep a site away form my mom. thats all. i commented on joshua's site the same night cause i went to it form the link in his comment. not a big coincidence!
ok, im le@sbia@n(it wont let my type the word normally because of "questionable content" wow). once again, big whop. this is sebastopol. about half the population is gay. well, fuck it, to be honest i'm not entirely sure which sex i prefer yet, cant figure everyhitng out.
EVERYTHING APART FROM THE NAME, PICTURE, AND LOCATION IS TRUE. im not trying to scam anyone.haha, but reading this did give me the shivers.
cheers,
deb
ps. i used to post here as kim, and had the site cloud nine, but that is gone now. parents.
Posted by: deb at May 1, 2005 01:50 AMThanks, Deb!
You have to understand, for us Plain Layne has a special significance, and we're always super-attuned to possible hoaxes now. "Layne" made us all a little psychotic in that regard. :-)
That, and the identity of the girl in the pictures continues to hold some fascination for us.
Don't hate us because we're paranoid. Heh.
Posted by: Ryan at May 1, 2005 11:39 AMi dont.
hehe, no worries, just you all scared the shit out of me last night, i have to say.
cheers,
deb
Deb:
The other thing, just to put this in some perspective, is that tracking Plain Layne back to Odin Soli taught us all some internet sluthing tricks. So now it's relatively easy to know where and how to look in order to backtrack comments and blog entries. So we didn't have to be very curious to backtrack your IP address and cross-reference names and locations from your blog.
And, like Ryan said, the real identity of the girl in the photo is kind of the last remaining mystery from that whole thing.

Posted by: Joshua at May 1, 2005 06:04 PMWhat's interesting to me about all this (besides the identity of the woman in the Plain Layne pictures, of course) is how much of a hot button issue this still seems to be for many of the PL regulars...
David, the family picture showing Layne surrounded by more than a dozen other people in a typical "family gathering" setup was only ever posted on the Aptura site. And no, AFAICT Odin is not in that picture although several other people are, who later turned up in pictures in the PL gallery.
To Odin Soli, should you read this: no, I wasn't the nice guy who made a copy of the PL archives available to deb. (Better safe than sorry around a guy who has direct access to any number of lawyers...)
Posted by: Gudy at May 2, 2005 08:15 AMWhat is totally odd about that site is that the punctuation is spot on. The girl can't spell, but she knows where a comma goes. Hmmm, me thinks someone is trying his hand at a new girly blog. You'd think he'd be smart enough to find a new pic. Heck, you can go anywhere and right click/save. Just weird.
Posted by: Kris at May 2, 2005 10:10 AMUh.
Posted by: Joshua at May 2, 2005 01:51 PMInteresting, I thought I would give a damn but, upon reading the link, and the comments, I really and truly couldn't be bothered enough to care for even a brief moment. Now, if you want to debate Hot Abercrombie Chick's real identity, I'm all over it!
I do know that I hate reading really crappily spelled blogs, they make my brain hurt.
Posted by: Johnny Huh? at May 2, 2005 04:01 PMHoly crap, Johnny. You made me go and do a Google search on "Hot Ambercrombie Chick." Shiiiaate, that's some pants tightening material right there. She looks so good, somebody ought to sop her up with a biscuit.
Posted by: Ryan at May 2, 2005 04:12 PMYeah. Cute girl. Though I assume that in your Googling you realized that the writer of that blog is neither hot, nor a chick.
Posted by: Joshua at May 2, 2005 04:32 PMYep, we all know how easy it is to grab some chick's picture and pretend to be a girl.
But yeah, she's a cutie, I get bored reading her philosophical arguments though.
Posted by: Johnny Huh? at May 2, 2005 04:42 PMYes, I realized the writer isn't the person in the photos. That doesn't make the person in the photos any less hot.
Posted by: Ryan at May 2, 2005 05:33 PMshit. so now u dont even believe what i have said here.
well, thikn what you like. and, about the grammar/spelling, i get grammar, but i type fast/couldnt give a shit about spelling.
cheers,
deb
Eh, deb, blogs get all sorts of people; some get the point, some don't, some understand sarcasm, some don't. Not sure where Kris comes from, but. . .
You know, whatever.
Posted by: Ryan at May 3, 2005 12:19 AMDeb, I actually used to read Cloud Nine a while ago and you'd commented on Intellectual Poison a couple of times as Kim.
I enjoyed your writing then and will check back in on the new blog. Though I'd be alot more likely to check back if you spell checked every so often, it really is hard on the brain.
